Indigo Leather Handles
Our Indigo Leather Handles, fitted to attach to all East-West Totes, are hand-dyed in Brooklyn. They are a great way to enhance the uniqueness of your tote.
We dye our handles in a traditional Japanese “Sukumo” indigo vat, created when indigo leaves are fermented by a combination of ash lye, calcium hydroxide, and wheat bran over several weeks. The result is a 100% natural indigo dye that produces the distinct “Japan Blue.” We submerge each handle several times to attain the ideal shade of medium-blue.
Due to the nature of this dyeing process, each handle is a slightly different shade of blue, enhancing the originality of each piece. As they are custom-dyed to order, please allow 2 weeks for delivery.

100% Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Natural Indigo Dye
Each handle measures 1" wide x 16" long
Note that the leather is meant to fit tightly around the collar buttons. When detaching or re-attaching, we recommend placing the bag on a flat surface. Additionally, you can poke a pencil, etc. through the key holes to loosen the leather before you fit the hole over the collar button.
Care + Wear
Indigo-dyed handles will darken with exposure to the sun and oil in your hands. This patina is part of the natural evolution of naturally-dyed leathers and should be embraced!
